Gibson decided to refocus his efforts on discounting in the late 1950s and opened the first Gibson's Discount Center Abilene in 1960. The franchising of the store concept was a major factor in the company's growth. Sam Walton once inquired about a Gibson's franchise. But nothing happened. In 1964, there were 138 Gibson's Discount Centers.
